Warning: This review contains spoilers and fangirling. Lots of fangirling.Note: Even though it's called 'Avengers Assemble' in the UK, I refuse to call it that, and therefore, 'The Avengers' it is.
This film is incredible. I've seen it twice now, once with a friend who hadn't seen Captain America, but had seen the rest, and once with another friend who is just as obsessed with the whole universe as I am.
The film is a lot funnier than I thought it would be, and Joss Whedon knows how to write a bloody good script. I've never seen anything else he's done - I never watched Buffy, and Firefly doesn't interest me. Despite this, I can tell he is a quality writer.Robert Downey Jr. is, well, Robert Downey Jr. Or, as I have come to the opinion, he is secretly Tony Stark. He really is a fabulous actor, but he doesn't take over, even though he's the Avenger with most films. He does get some very funny lines, and his snark battle with Steve is excellent. Iron Man taking the nuke through the portal was a very emotional moment, and PEPPER WHY WAS YOUR PHONE ON SILENT YOU IDIOT?!
Ahem.Steve/Captain America...I was actually kinda disappointed they didn't make more of the whole 'ma out of his time' thing. Although getting the flying monkeys reference was funny. And I think they should have made more of a deal of Bucky, and Peggy, and of Steve's relationship with Tony's dad. But he was also excellent. I liked the way he took control of the end battle, showing that he is actually the only one with battle experience. Thor. <3 That is all.Alright, maybe not all. I've only seen Thor once, so I don't know his character very well, but I loved the 'He is still my brother. He's killed 80 people in 2 days. He's adopted.' exchange.
Since watching The Avengers twice, I have fallen in love with Tom Hiddleston. He is amazing as Loki, and he looks pretty damn good in that armour as well...:DBlack Widow/Hawkeye - both incredibly attractive. Jeremy Renner...ARMS. I've read a lot of criticism about his archery technique, but to be fair, it's a superhero movie, it's not meant to be super realistic. The character change between being under Loki's control and being himself is excellent, and you can really tell the difference between the performance.Scarlet Johannson is also brilliant, and she obviously worked hard on the martial arts - the chair scene at the start is so cool.Coulson. COULSON! How could you Joss?! He's been my favourite character for a while, and the film only cemented this in my mind, and then Loki went and killed him! :(Bruce Banner is adorable, and The Hulk is just funny. 'Puny god.' And I love that they got 'Hulk; smash' in it!So, anyway.
The film is really well written, and acted, and directed, and the only gripes I have about it are small, and I'm sure they'll be rectified in future spin offs/actual The Avengers sequel.I can't wait for Captain America 2/Thor 2/Iron Man 3/The Avengers 2.
